Copenhagen cleans electric scooters off the streets

Electric scooter rental stops on the streets and sidewalks of much of Copenhagen. In stores, rentals can be allowed, but then the electric scooter must be returned to the place where it was rented.

The decision, which applies to the densely populated areas of the Danish capital, has been taken by the municipal leadership (Citizen Representation).

Township land should be used for other purposes, says Copenhagen Mayor for Technology and Environment Ninna Hedeager Olsen (Unit List).

“It could be banks, it could be outdoor cafes and everything else,” he tells the Ritzau news agency.

Since electric scooters hit the streets in 2019, they have been debated in Denmark. Rental companies have responded by introducing their own restrictions, but that is not enough, says the mayor of Technology and Environment, who notes that companies acted at the last minute, when they knew the decision was on the way.

The Swedish electric scooter company Voi currently has around 600,000 users in Copenhagen. Voi’s largest owner is listed on VNV Global with a stake of about 30 percent.
