A 45-year-old prisoner convicted of murder in the US state of Indiana has been executed by injection of poison. The execution was the fifth to take place at the federal level since July, when federal executions resumed after a 17-year hiatus.

On Thursday, federal judge Tanya Chutkan ruled that the new Justice Department regulations for lethal injections violate drug safety legislation. Therefore, she ordered the planned execution to be suspended. But the country’s Ministry of Justice appealed the verdict and was heard in court and the execution was carried out.

Inmate Keith Nelson was sentenced to death for raping and murdering a ten-year-old girl in the state of Kansas in 1999.

The execution was the second this week since another inmate convicted of murder, Lezmond Mitchell, was killed Wednesday, also in Indiana.
