Continuous cyberattacks against the Västra Götaland region

When the alarm went off at the Västra Götaland region digital monitoring center VGR on the morning of December 7, IT technicians on duty were able to quickly establish that something serious was about to happen.

Now it was for real, someone tried to break through the region’s IT security system.

Who or which VGR IT manager Maria Skoglöf doesn’t know yet.

– What we do know is that it is one or more unknown actors who have directed several cyber attacks against us. Fortunately, we have not had any impact on our operations, he tells DN.

On Monday morning, Maria Skoglöf held a meeting on the attacks and was later able to claim that attacks on the IT environment in the region continue.

– It’s still happening, the attacks continue, she says.

The event has reported to the police and the Säpo has been involved, but Maria Skoglöf cannot comment on how the cooperation with the security police is. It also does not know if more regions than Västra Götaland are affected.

Maria Skoglöf also does not want to answer the question of whether a hacker who manages to break through the region’s cyber defense could access information classified as patient records.

– I can not comment on that, he says and continues:

– The main point is that we have such good protection that we can stop them.
