Gothenburg has a traffic strategy that, among other things, means that public transport and pedestrian and bicycle traffic will double by 2035, at the same time that car traffic will decrease by 25 percent.
But it turned out to be slower than expected. Although trips by public transport have increased faster than expected, at the same time, bicycle use has not increased at a sufficient rate and car trips have not increased or decreased.
“The bottom line is that car traffic must become less attractive”
Politicians have previously tasked the traffic bureau with analyzing what should be prioritized to achieve the goals. The conclusion of the Swedish Transport Administration is that the targets are possible, but then several measures are required, such as increasing public transport, increasing car parking costs and a higher congestion tax.
– The conclusion is that car traffic must be less attractive in relation to other modes of transport. It is not about eliminating the possibility of driving a car, but somehow the competitive situation must change. If you do not take the initiative of such measures or with the corresponding effect, it will be difficult to achieve the objectives. But it is up to politicians to decide whether they want to achieve the goals of the trafficking strategy, says Joachim Karlgren.
Democrats have proposed eliminating the traffic strategy and the issue should have been raised at the Transportation Committee meeting last week, but Transportation Committee Chair Toni Orsulic (M) postponed the issue because he wants more time to be able to take a position on the issue.
– It is a fairly complex issue, Toni Orsulic tells the newspaper.
