The spread of the infection appears to be out of control and the number of deaths from COVID-19 continues to rise.

Trust in Anders Tegnell and the Swedish Public Health Agency is plummeting.

– More and more people are wondering if the Swedish strategy is the right one, says Demoskop CEO Karin Nelson.

Compared to October, there are now 24 percent fewer Swedes in December who have great or fairly great trust in the Public Health Agency. Now less than half of Swedes have great or fairly great confidence in authority.

– As Swedes we have hoped this strategy is the right one, but the latest development with further spread of the infection indicates something else, more and more people are wondering if the Swedish strategy is the right one, says Demoskop CEO Karin Nelson.

– The figures are the lowest we measure for the Public Health Agency.

There is no difference for the government

However, confidence in the government has remained unchanged since October, albeit at a low level. 35 percent of Swedes have great or fairly great trust in Stefan Löven and his ministers.

– It may be that the government has made independent decisions instead of following the recommendations of the Public Health Agency, says Karin Nelson.

In recent days, the government has introduced several new restrictions. Among other things, until January 24 all public activities carried out by the state, municipalities and regions that are not considered necessary will be closed. The size of parties allowed in restaurants is reduced from eight to four people, and you will need to wear a mouth guard on public transportation during peak hours.

Most want mouth protection

But the new survey shows that Swedes want even stronger restrictions on society to reduce the spread of the infection. In the Demoskop poll, 59 percent responded that they do not think the current restrictions are far-reaching enough, compared with 25 percent in October. The proportion of people who believe that mouth guards should be used in elderly care and public transport has also increased significantly.

– Now most think that mouth guards should be used, but it is not something that is seen in society. Most still do not have a mouth guard. But that’s how we Swedes work, we’re waiting for instructions, says Karin Nelson.

The Swedish Public Health Agency has its theory on why trust fails.

“People are probably tired of the pandemic and wish it would go away faster than it is now,” Sara Rörbecker, press secretary for the Swedish Public Health Agency, wrote in an email.

Does it have any effect on the way you work?

“No, it is important that we continue to work according to the assignment of authority. So far, we haven’t seen anything other than people’s compliance with advice and recommendations, which is good. “

Do you have plans to try to increase the confidence of the Swedish people in you?

“We continue to do our job in accordance with our mission and we know that confidence figures change over time for a number of reasons.”
