Concern about infection during the New Year in Sälen and Åre

Dalarna care association president Marion Vaeggemose urges cottage owners to think twice about whether they really need to go to Sälenfjällen during the New Year.

– I understand that the owners want to manage it and that there is economy in it. But as a citizen, you have to think: Should I really go up just because it’s open? You have to think twice.

The risk of spreading the infection. it also increases during the new year with alcohol, he says.

– There are queues for shops and Systembolaget and you meet a lot of people. We believe that it is unnecessary to increase the risk of spreading infections and pressure on medical care.

Roger Bergebo, President of the Healthcare Association in Jämtland, shares his concerns and mentions the number of ski tourists in, for example, Åre.

– What will happen this winter? It is completely reserved in the mountain world. There is a potential risk of the infection spreading after the New Year.

In the Skistar ski resorts in Sälen, Vemdalen and Åre, skiers are encouraged to maintain “a club-length distance”.

In addition to après ski and closed nightclubs, open-air tents will reduce pressure in restaurants, which have table reservations. Ski rental and ski pass purchase can be done digitally and the number of customers is limited at the rental points and heated cabins. On the loudspeakers, skiers remember the distance, on the ski lifts there are hems, and the ski app warns of queues. In addition to the police, security companies and congestion hosts make rounds.

– We have taken the measures we can take, in dialogue with the Swedish Public Health Agency and the infection control doctors. From that perspective, it feels good. So I hope everyone takes care. We report weekly to the county administrative board, says Jonas Bauer, destination manager at Skistar Sälen.

Around 30 by Skistars Sälen employees have been isolated after “some” tested positive for COVID-19. They have been in quarantine for seven days.

– In dialogue with the region, we have isolated a larger group where only a few have tested positive. These are additional security measures. Some feel a bit uncomfortable but are not positive, others have worked with them. They are isolated from each other separately. We have had to temporarily close some ski shops.

A few weeks ago, Skistar received criticism after 40 employees partied at a residence in Åre, against the advice of the Public Health Agency. When asked how they got infected in Sälen, Jonas Bauer says:

– It is not known for sure, but they live very together.

Alarms in Värmland county the county administrative board that ski tourists do not keep their distances, but are crammed into service stations and restaurants along the road to the mountains, writes Nya Wermlands-Tidningen.

According to infection control doctors in Dalarna and Jämtland-Härjedalen, there is currently no indication that ski tourism has created the spread of the infection.

– Until now – pepper, pepper. So far we’ve done it, it seems, says Anders Lindblom, an infection control doctor at Dalarna.

– The ski itself and how it works in stores seems to work well. A small cloud of unease is the New Year, which is usually more emphasized at the holidays. It’s about how they all act, says Annika Ersson, an infection control assistant doctor at Jämtland-Härjedalen.
