“Competition, not language, controls grant distribution”

In a debate article, Professor Olle Josephson harshly criticizes the Swedish Research Council for the fact that Language & Style magazine did not receive part of this year’s contribution to scientific journals. He believes that the Swedish Research Council, therefore, deliberately puts scientific journals that are published in Swedish at a disadvantage. Unfortunately, Josephson’s debate article appears to be based on several misunderstandings about how our contribution to the magazine works.

The grant is distributed every three years to Swedish-based humanities and social science journals. The examination and classification of the applications is carried out through an evaluation of experts, called Peer Review, where leading researchers from all fields of the humanities and social sciences are represented. Therefore, journal contributions are awarded in competition and there is no guarantee that journals that have previously received support will be able to retain it. In other words, it is not a matter of prematurely “restricting” an ongoing contribution, but of a new trial where the competitive situation may have changed since the last time.
