Three years ago, it was unclear whether the Columbus Crew would remain in Columbus.
Therefore, the second MLS championship title became very important to the fans.
“That’s why I got so excited,” coach Caleb Porter told the New York Times.
Columbus Crew scored points before hospitality in the MLS final where they are now champions after a 3-0 win against the Seattle Sounders at MAFRE Stadium on Saturday night.
This is the second time Crew has won the North American league, most recently in 2008.
The new championship title weighs more because of the turbulence the team and its supporters went through: In 2017, the team’s previous owners threatened to move the team to Texas, but in late 2018, the team managed to attract new owners and fans. Columsbus were able to keep their equipment.
“I dreamed of the championship title”
– When I took the job, I dreamed of taking the championship title for the fans, coach Caleb Porter said after the game according to the NY Times.
– That’s why I got so excited, he continued.
The great hero of the champions was Lucas Zelarayán, who scored twice and scored another goal.
Svensson played others
The team’s midfield star Narlington Dagbe and forward Pedro Santos were not in the final because they tested positive for the coronavirus.
Former Helsingborg player Emmanuel Boateng, who plays for the Columbus Crew, spent the entire game on the bench.
Sounders’ Gustaf Svensson of Sweden, however, had to play the entire second half after sitting on the bench in the first.
