November has been unusually warm, with average temperatures above normal across much of the country.
Now that can change. This week it is cold and Svealand may have the first snow of the season.
So far, November has been unusually warm: In some parts of the country, the average temperature has been two to five degrees higher than normal.
But towards the end of the week, lower temperatures are expected. In most of Norrland, it can be freezing degrees even during the day, and the first snow can fall in central Sweden.
– Cooler air comes in, it’s pretty clear. Starting Thursday it will be colder across the country and if there is rainfall in the south, there could be snow elements in the southernmost parts of Norrland and Svealand, says Sofia Söderberg, a meteorologist at SMHI.
Cooler weather means more normal seasonal temperatures.

Småland heat record
The unusually warm weather in November also set a new heat record for Småland’s Gladhammar. On November 6, it was 18.4 degrees, warmer than it has been on that date in 52 years. The last record was set in 1968 in Ugerup, Skåne.
Why was it so hot in November?
– The low and high pressure distribution, as well as the hot and cold air masses, have occasionally given a flow of air to the southwest and warm air has been able to enter Sweden. Low pressure activity in the North Atlantic has contributed to the extra soft air portions periodically, says Sofia Söderberg.

Snow in the mountains
Before the cooler air enters, the mild, gray weather is expected to continue even into the beginning of the week. It will be cloudy and temperate in most of the country with 5-10 degrees in most places.
Rain is expected to come in from the southwest, which will then move north. On Tuesday, there will be rain mainly in North Norrland, which in the mountains comes partly in the form of snow. In the middle of the week it seems that there will be some snow in the north of the country, where it will also be quite windy.
