Swedish and Danish police have expanded their cooperation in working against cross-border crime in the Öresund region, Ekot reports.

The new Öresund Border Center has been opened, where a group of police officers concentrating on mapping and fighting cross-border crime are physically sitting together.

– Criminals don’t care about borders, if they know someone across the strait, they can commit crimes together, says Torben Svarrer of the Copenhagen Police and head of the Öresund Border Center.

– We have had a good collaboration with the police across the strait for a long time, both formally and informally. Now we are taking the next step and I hope we can develop it further, says Torben Svarrer, to Ekot.

Plans for the new center were launched after Denmark, in November last year, introduced a temporary border check against Sweden after some high-profile Danish cases involving Swedish criminals.

The first Danish police force began their work this spring and were joined by staff from the Swedish police and customs in early September.

The center will focus primarily on explosives, weapons, drugs, money smuggling, and travel leagues.
