Civilians killed in fighting in Afghanistan
Several people were killed when clashes broke out between the Taliban movement and government forces in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar on Saturday. The Taliban attacked several places in the area, to which the Afghan government responded.
There is concern in various parts of Afghanistan. Several grenades were fired at the capital Kabul on Saturday, something that the IS terrorist movement claims to be behind as well.
“The security forces repulsed the attack, killing 51 terrorists and wounding nine,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Civilians are also said to have been victims of the fighting. According to local authorities, seven people from the same family died.
The confrontation lasted for several hours during the night until Sunday, reports a journalist from the AFP news agency at the scene. It is unknown if there are deaths or injuries among the government security forces.
The Taliban have a strong presence in Kandahar, a province often referred to as the “cradle of the Taliban movement.”
Despite ongoing unrest in the country, the Afghan government and the Taliban have continued the tentative peace talks in Qatar since mid-September. But on Saturday, the parties announced that the talks will take a break until January 5.
