The municipality of Hörby decided that the rainbow flag should no longer be hoisted outside the town hall.

Now the Church of Sweden in Hörby fights back by raising the colorful flag across the street.

Hörby’s municipal board, which is run by Swedish Democrats in collaboration with moderates, Christian Democrats and SPI Välfärden (formerly Sweden’s pensioners’ interest party), drew up a new flag policy on Monday. From now on, only the Swedish flag and the Hörby flag will be hoisted at municipal activities, i.e. not the so-called pride flag or other minority flags.

On Wednesday, a rally was held in front of the town hall to protest against the decision, reports SVT Skåne.

– It’s a bad sign. Pride represents diversity and that is very important, says Marie Bergström, one of the protesters, to the television channel.

The Church of Sweden in Hörby, which is located opposite the town hall, intervenes in the debate by waving its own rainbow flag. But the parish priest Olof Sandström stresses that it is not addressed to the municipality.

– We do not mark with it because we want to do it against the municipality, but we mark the values that the pride flag represents, says Sandström to SVT Skåne.
