The Chinese billionaire would have been one of the judges in his Africa’s Business Heroes talent hunt, where startups compete to earn 1.5 million dollars, just over 12 million crowns. But the prominence of Jack Mas was canceled. Instead, he was replaced by another senior Alibaba executive.
At the event, a spokesperson for the e-commerce giant stated that Ma was unable to participate due to a “scheduling conflict,” according to the British Telegraph.
Since then, however, speculation about the billionaire’s absence has increased, and he is now suspected of having disappeared, according to Yahoo Finance.
Held criticized speech
Jack Mas Ant Group’s company is one of the largest in the world. Among other things, the company is behind China’s largest digital payment platform, Alipay, which has more than 1 billion users.
However, the Ant Group has faced opposition from China since Jack Ma made a controversial speech in October. Ma criticized China’s regulatory system for hindering innovation in the financial sector and similar global banking rules in a “club for seniors.”
Following the announcement, no listing was planned in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
