A university student puts up a poster demanding that the Chinese authorities release twelve activists who tried to flee Hong Kong.
The Chinese authorities have formally approved the arrest of twelve activists who tried to flee Hong Kong.
The group was captured about 70 miles southeast of Hong Kong on August 23. They then tried to escape by boat. The group was handed over to the police in the city of Shenzhen, on China’s border with Hong Kong.
After the capture, the twelve activists have been detained by the Chinese legal system, say relatives and human rights lawyers.
But on Wednesday, the Chinese prosecutor’s office in Shenzhen announced that it had approved the arrests of the 12, who were not identified. Two of them are accused of “preparing to flee”, while the others are accused of illegally crossing the border.
Family members said they were shocked and concerned by the decision.
Several of those arrested participated in critical protests in Beijing last year.
