Chile has gone from the bottom up.

This spring, the country was one of the worst victims of the crown in South America.

They are now among the best in the world for vaccination.

The corona pandemic hit South America in late spring 2020. Chile was hit hard: At the end of May, the country had the highest number of infections in the world per capita, according to CNN.

But now they are at the top of another much better list.

After Israel, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and the United Kingdom, Chile is the country that has vaccinated the most in terms of population.

Many different manufacturers

Almost three million Chileans have already received their first injection. This corresponds to almost 16 percent of the population. Local health authorities hope that all people over 65 have been vaccinated this week.

The recipe for success has been to source large quantities of vaccines from various providers at an early stage. This weekend, the government ordered 35.7 million doses, enough to vaccinate more than 90 percent of the population. The vaccine comes from Pfizer / Biontech, Sinovac, Covax, Johnson & Johnson, and Astra Zeneca.

Negotiations are also underway with Russia to buy doses of its Sputnik V vaccine, Reuters reports.

80 percent will be vaccinated in July

– The key was that Chile understood from the beginning that it was necessary to enter into agreements with many different vaccine manufacturers. In Latin America, Chile is one of the countries with the best conditions to do business and it has given them an advantage, Elmer Huerta, an expert in public health, tells CNN.

According to him, the country’s politicians have also known how to put aside political tensions and help control the infection.

Now, the goal is for five million Chileans to have been vaccinated by the end of March and 80 percent before the year begins.

Vaccine in shopping centers

Authorities have worked hard to convert public spaces, shopping malls, and sports stadiums into vaccination centers.

CNN has spoken with Santiago Gabriela Valderrama, who received his injection at one of the city’s universities. She says the vaccination is “fantastic” and “very well organized”.

Santiago in quarantine

Therefore, the situation of the crown has begun to improve. But for a long time it seemed dark for the longest country in the world.

In mid-May, 6.5 million people were quarantined in the capital Santiago. But that didn’t stop the infection and the number of cases increased dramatically. The cities of Valparaíso and Viña del Mar were also closed in June.

But in July, people began to expect a more normal daily life. The Chilean government presented a kind of “step-by-step” plan that in five stages would take the country from total quarantine to an open society.

Curfew at night

In December, cases increased again, leading to new restrictions in the capital, including a total lockdown on weekends. Across the country, the curfew applies between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The Foreign Ministry urges Swedes in the country to follow developments in the local media and to be prepared for the introduction of new restrictions such as curfews and quarantine on short notice.
