The UN calls for immediate action to protect civilians in the province of Cabo Delgado (Cabo Delgado) in northeastern Mozambique, where jihadists have recently murdered and maimed dozens of people in several brutal attacks.
“The situation is desperate, both for those trapped in conflict areas without sufficient means to survive and for those who are forced to flee both within the province and to other parts of the country,” said the head of human rights of the Michelle Bachelet, in a statement.
“Those who remain lack basic needs and run the risk of being killed, sexually exploited, kidnapped or forcibly recruited into armed groups. Those who flee also risk their lives,” he continues.
Islamist extremists began carrying out attacks in Cabo Delgado, which borders Tanzania, in 2017. By 2020, violence has increased and, in recent days, up to 50 people are reported to have been killed by groups affiliated with IS. Many of the victims, including women and children, are said to have been beheaded.
