The trial of the 14 people suspected of participating in the 2015 terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo began in Paris in early September. In connection with the publication of the magazine again a series of controversial cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad – which sparked major protests.

Author and former Charlie Hebdo contributor Marie Darrieussecq tells SVT that the ongoing trial poses a new danger to editorial staff. She says they receive death threats every day.

On Friday, the circumstances surrounding the knife attack outside the former editorial office premises are still unclear. But according to Marie Darrieussecq, Charlie Hebdo is ready for something new to happen.

– The ongoing trial means that the level of risk is particularly high today. I’m not surprised this is happening, he says.

Calls from journalists

Recently, 100 French media organizations have signed an open letter in support of freedom of expression, which they believe is threatened after all the death threats.

Due to the threats, the newsroom now works in a bunker. The new workplace became too much for Marie Darrieussecq, who no longer works hourly shifts.

– I couldn’t get used to the bunker, I became very claustrophobic. I really admire those who remain. It is a scandal that a time change today, in a democracy, needs to work under such conditions, says Marie Darrieussecq.

Is freedom of expression threatened in France today?

– I do not know. I just know that sometimes I don’t dare to say certain things, says Marie Darrieussecq.
