Charlie Hebdo is criticized for the image of Meghan and Elizabeth

Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry’s grand interview with Oprah Winfrey has rocked the British royal family and the world. The couple made strong accusations against the court and said the royal family was concerned about Archie’s skin color because Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, is dark-skinned.

Last week, the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo chose to respond to the interview. The cover of the latest issue of the magazine tells how Queen Elizabeth suffocates Meghan by placing herself on the neck of the Duchess. The headline reads “WHY MEGHAN LEFT BUCKINGHAM” and a Meghan speech bubble with the text “Because I couldn’t breathe anymore.”

The drawing is believed by many to be a caricature of the murder of American George Floyd, who was killed by a police officer in Minneapolis last year. In the high-profile video, which was broadcast around the world, George Floyd could be heard saying “I can’t breathe” multiple times while a policeman is on his neck.

Receive praise and criticism

After the newspaper left the press, both criticism and praise have been directed at Charlie Hebdo. Many believe that the comparison between Meghan and George Floyd is unpleasant. At the same time, others cheer on the newspaper for its provocation and how they raise the issue of racism.

In an Instagram post, Halima Begum, CEO of the Runnymede Trust think tank, writes that the drawing is “wrong in all respects.”

“The queen as George Floyd’s killer crushing Meghan’s neck? Meghan says she can’t breathe? This doesn’t provoke, make anyone laugh, or generate discussion about racism. It reduces problems and rapes.”

Another user writes:

“This shows how we reduce black life. Black death and trauma are used to laugh. It is not reflective. Rather, it promotes racism. “

Others say the cover draws attention to the colonial history of the royal family and Meghan’s experiences of racism.

“The British royal family also represents centuries of colonial rule and oppression of countries populated by racist individuals. The MM interview, etc. is only a small part of it. You are offended by the tree while ignoring the forest.”writes one person on Twitter.

Denies the accusations of racism

Neither Buckingham Palace nor the prince and princess have publicly commented on the cover of Charlie Hebdo. But after the high-profile interview with Oprah Winfrey, both Prince William and the court have denied the racist allegations.

During a school visit with Mrs Kate in East London, the news from Sky caught William.

– Are you a racist family? the reporter asked.

– We are not a racist family, answered William.
