Chalmers cancels the famous Halloween party

Earlier in the week, the GP drew attention to the fact that Chalmers intended to host his traditional Halloween party despite the corona pandemic. The news gained wings and the party plans received attention in various national media.

– I don’t think big parties are the right way, Anders Tegnell commented about the Halloween party at Expressen.

Planning for the event started when infection rates were dropping and the idea was to throw a crown safe party. Among other things, the guests would be admitted to two different rounds.

Then i wouldn’t be responsible

Now, however, the organizers choose to cancel everything. Partly because it is difficult to organize a large crown-proof party, partly because the infection situation has changed.

– We place high demands on our events to be safe. In the planning phase, where we still are, we realized that it would take too many resources to make it safe, says David Welander, president of Chalmers student unions.

He continues:

– But above all we canceled because we have a negative development of contagion in society. Then I would not be responsible.

Negative impact on the well-being of students

According to David Welander, the decision was greeted with understanding.

– As we have been clear throughout the planning phase that there will be no event if we cannot do it safely.

The union president emphasizes that it is important to find safe ways to socialize. Many of Chalmers’ students have moved to Gothenburg, perhaps from home for the first time, and they have all their interaction through school.

– Right now it may be the only social collaboration that students get. More and more education that would have taken place physically has gone digital and students are expected to feel at home themselves, says David Welander.

According to a small, yet unpublished study, the overall well-being of students has decreased from about 4 to about 2.8 on a five-point scale.

– It is preliminary information but the indication is clear, and we received many comments about it. Students are not feeling well right now, says David Welander.
