Storm surge, flooding and high winds threaten Honduras and Nicaragua as Category 4 Hurricane Eta hits the continent.

The storm, which has been described as “extremely dangerous”, is moving towards the coast of Central America with wind speeds of up to 67 m / s and is expected to reach land on Tuesday morning, local time. The winds are believed to increase in strength.

“Life-threatening tidal waves, catastrophic winds, flash floods and landslides are expected in parts of Central America,” warns the US hurricane center NHC in a statement.

– It’s raining a lot and blowing a lot. The sea is stormy. We are afraid, says teacher Kevin Lackwood from Cayos Miskitos in Nicaragua, where many have already been evacuated to safer places.

Eta is also expected to wreak havoc in El Salvador, southeastern Mexico, southern Haiti, and Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

Fixed: In a previous version of the text, there was an incorrect wording on the wind speed.
