On Wednesday, a car entered the Trinity Church at Stortorget in Karlskrona.
The driver was seriously injured in connection with the accident.
– Ambulance has started cardiopulmonary resuscitation. So it could be a serious accident, says Kim Hild, press spokesman for the Southern Police Region at 12.30.
The driver, a man in his 75s, was taken to the hospital by ambulance and later died of his injuries.
Police suspect that a sudden case of illness may be behind the accident.
– There are strong indications that it is a case of disease, there is nothing we can confirm yet but everything indicates it, says Kim Hild.
Several people helped
According to eyewitnesses, the car was speeding towards the church.
– We sat and ate in an adjoining restaurant and watched it crash into the wall at a fairly high speed. Then it stopped, there was only a large cloud of smoke, says an SVT witness.
Some people who were in the plaza when the accident occurred approached the car to help the driver.
– The church had a defibrillator, private individuals hooked it up and started the rescue before we reached the scene, says Paul Birgersson, the rescue leader at the rescue service in Karlkrona at 12.50.
When the ambulance left the scene, the person was active according to Paul Birgersson. But in the afternoon, the police announced that the man died from his injuries.
