Trial begins for van massacres in Canada

It is linked to the incel misogynist movement. The trial against Alek Minassian, accused of murdering ten people while driving through a crowd with a pickup truck in Toronto in April 2018, begins now.

Minassian is charged with 10 murders and 16 attempted murders. Eight women and two men were killed when the van hit the sidewalk in Toronto in what has been described as the worst massacre in Canada in decades.

The trial was postponed twice due to the pandemic. Now it will be done via link and Minassian, 28, will be heard from jail. He was arrested the same day as the event and has been locked up ever since.

The public will be able to follow the negotiations on giant screens in a convention center in Toronto. The trial is expected to last a month.

As Minassian has already admitted, the trial will focus on his state of mind at the time of the act.

During questioning, Minassian has said that his anger towards women was the motive for the attack. She has also said that she has met like-minded men online who describe themselves as “incels,” an abbreviation that can be translated as “involuntary celibacy” and is often used by men who express hatred and mistrust of women.
