Canada started the semi-final against Russia and scored in 59 seconds. Canada then continued to advance in the match and the final score was eventually written at 5-0. The victory means that Canada is now ready for the 13th final of the nation’s JVM in the 2000s.
The match had barely had time to start before Canada got off to a strong start by scoring the first goal of the match. Canada also continued to control the game during the first period and was really effective ahead of Yarolslav Askarov on Russia’s goal in the first period. The efficiency of the Canada side allowed them to extend their lead 2-0 and 3-0 before the end of the first period.
When Canada, early in the second period, extended the lead to 4-0 through Braden Schneider, Canada had one foot in the final. But Russia continued to struggle and ripped apart in attacking play during the second period, which created some chaos in Canada’s defensive play. Russia also scored a goal just over three minutes from the end of the period. But the goal was ruled out for offside after referee video examined the goal and showed that a Russian player with the smallest possible margin had time to cross the blue line and the goal was disallowed. With 30 seconds left in the period, Canada was penalized after Cozens stopped on a free throw. Cozens himself took the penalty but Askarov in the Russian goal made a good save and the team went to rest with the score 4-0.
In the final period, Canada controlled the game from the beginning and was able to more or less play the period. With 1.29 left in the game, team captain Dylan Cozens punctured the game when he set the final score 5-0 in an empty goal and Canada was able to celebrate their place in the final.
Canada’s victory means that they will now have to play in the JVM final against the winner of the match between the United States and Finland.
