On Tuesday, the European Parliament will vote to make it illegal for vegetarian products to have meat-related words like hamburger and sausage in the name.
A campaign to save the vegan burger has so far collected nearly 190,000 signatures.
– Strange, says EU MP Jytte Guteland (S) about the proposal.
Soy sausages and veggie burgers will soon be illegal. In any case, if the EU proposal that Parliament votes on Tuesday is approved.
In that case, only meat products would have names like schnitzel, steak, sausage, and hamburger.
This has prompted nearly 190,000 people in Europe to sign a petition. In Swedish, the campaign has the slogan “save the veggie burger!”

Stop drinking milk
It is now forbidden to call herbal drinks names reminiscent of dairies and milk.
But on Tuesday, a supplement will also be presented at the table of MEPs, where they can vote whether to ban plant products with dairy products.
Therefore, oatmeal drinks would no longer be called “milk-like” or marketed without milk or as an alternative to milk.
If Parliament votes in favor, the proposal will be sent to the Council of Ministers, which will then make the final decision.
Lobby pressed
Social Democratic MP Jytte Guteland is concerned that the proposal could pass.

Strange, says EU MP Jytte Guteland (S) about the proposal.
– Unfortunately, I don’t feel safe next week. I think it is strange that this proposal is on the table, he says.
Jytte Guteland sees the fact that vegetarian products have boomed in Europe in recent years as a possible explanation for the result.
– It may be because there is a lobby because you feel pressured by the industry now that more and more consumers are beginning to change.
She ate a veggie burger herself last week.
– So it was because I was hungry for a hamburger, but I wanted a vegetarian, he says.
