The Center Party’s trust in Fredrick Federley is damaged, party leadership says.

The party claims that Federley has not been fully open about his previous relationship with a person convicted of sex crimes against minors.

It was last week that Federley, C’s second vice chairman and the party’s top MEPs, announced that he would be taking a break from politics and assignments for some time due to mental illness. Behind it all, he confirmed, was a recently ended relationship with a man who less than ten years ago was convicted of serious sexual crimes against children.

“The crimes he has committed are frankly horrible, unspeakable and completely unforgivable. We have now gone our separate ways,” Federley wrote in a post on social media.

Party secretary Michael Arthursson later said in a written comment that the party takes what has emerged very seriously and that the man had been convicted of heinous crimes.

Since then, the party has not commented on the issue again, but wants to do so now because many questions have been asked from the media about what is happening.

Now Arthursson says that everything is very tragic and worrying for Federley.

He claims that the party did not know anything until last Monday when Federley was asked about the information that emerged. Then Federley himself declared, according to Arthursson, that he had known for some time.

– What makes him more worrying is that it has come to light that he knows what this person has done for a long time and it has damaged confidence in him.

When asked how long Federley has known about the person’s background, Arthursson says:

– He has known, we do not know exactly how long, we only found out last Monday. But how long has he known for himself, he has to answer when he himself is ready to discuss this issue again.

Arthursson says Federley will not be active on the party board, the executive committee or the European Parliament for two months. He has applied to Parliament for sick leave during that period.

When he returns and has had a chance to recover, the party will pick up the discussion about his future in C again.

Return

TT: Do you think I can go back?

– We will see what happens after sick leave and what he draws himself for the consequences and what comes out when we can have more conversations about it.

When asked if he, party leader Annie Lööf, or others in the party were aware of Federley’s relationship, Arthursson says:

– Annie Lööf was as surprised as I was on Monday when we found out about this, none of us knew anything about this relationship.
