The new variant of the mutated virus has hit the UK hard.
Medical care is more strained than ever throughout the pandemic. The proportion of patients seen in British hospitals has increased by 30 per cent in one week. New closure

More vaccinated than the rest of Europe
One big difference between the situation this spring and the current situation is vaccination, says Boris Johnson.
– In the UK we have vaccinated more people than in the rest of Europe combined, says Johnson and continues:
– If all goes well, we will have offered a first dose of vaccine to everyone in the four most prioritized groups in mid-February.
This means all people living in nursing homes and the staff working there, all people over the age of 70, all medical and health staff, as well as front-line social workers and people who are particularly sensitive to viruses for other reasons.

Even if vaccination goes according to plan, it will take a few more weeks for priority groups to receive their second dose and achieve immunity. And it may take additional weeks before the pressure on the healthcare system is released, according to the prime minister.

However, he adds that the closure can be left in mid-February if everything goes according to plan.
