At the press conference on Saturday afternoon, Boris Johnson announced that the new strain of the virus is driving the spread of the infection and that the government is now forced to introduce stricter restrictions over the Christmas weekend.
Since the change of the month, the government has used a pedagogical scale in which infection control measures have been classified into three steps based on their extent. In this way, different rules could be used in different areas, but much of the country has been at the highest level recently.

During Saturday’s press conference, the Prime Minister announced that London and the South East of England are now at a fourth risk level. The new restrictions mean that residents in areas that are included in risk level four are expected to celebrate Christmas with only people in their own home and can only meet one person outside of it.
In addition, the fourth risk level means “unnecessary” gyms and stores will be closed.
– We must be guided by science, when the virus changes we must also do so, says Boris Johnson at the press conference.
Earlier, the Prime Minister presented a relief to the Christmas celebrations and later said that it would be inhumane to cancel it.
70 percent more contagious
Feverish work is underway to evaluate the new sars-cov-2 variant, which has so far been discovered by 60 local authorities. It is 70 percent more contagious than previous variants, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced during Saturday’s press conference.
There is no evidence that the strain reacts differently to available vaccines, but the number of deaths is closely monitored. The World Health Organization (WHO) is kept informed.
