Many of us were heartbroken when Lady Whistledown announced yesterday that Regé-Jean Page, who played Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings, in the first season of Bridgerton, will not appear in season 2 of the costume drama.

Bridgerton took the world by storm this Christmas and became Netflix’s biggest hit and has been viewed by 82 million households around the world. Many fans were disappointed yesterday when news broke that Simon Basset will not be returning in the second season of the Netflix drama. Those of us who have read the books may not be so surprised, but who wouldn’t have wanted to follow Daphne and Simon for another season!

The first season of the drama follows (somewhat loosely) Julia Quinn’s book A Different Alliance with the Bridgerton family’s eldest daughter Daphne Bridgerton and her husband Simon Basset as main characters. So it seems quite natural that they were the biggest stars of this popular series.

In the book and the show’s first season, we follow Daphne and Simon as they pretend to fall in love to make Daphe more attractive in London’s competitive marriage market. And when that happens, they finally fall in love and overcome one of Simon’s fears, namely becoming a father.

Those of us who have read Julia Quinn’s books know that we shouldn’t assume that future seasons will provide the same amount of airtime for Simon and Daphne, given that each subsequent novel in the series focuses on a different brother to Bridgerton.

In Julia Quinn’s second book, An Unexpected Love, we follow her eldest son Anthony Bridgerton, who embarks on his own romantic journey. That’s what we hope to follow in Season 2!

Unfortunately, we have to sadly announce that Simon Basset is also not mentioned in a meaningful way in the upcoming books and therefore we must conclude that he will not have the title role in the series again.
