Brexit problem for Scottish fish in the EU

– Customers expect fresh products, so they don’t buy. It’s a disaster, says Santiago Buesa, whose company SB Fish in Scottish Troon has for the moment been forced to stop exports to the EU.

The reason is that deliveries take too long due to the necessary paperwork as the UK is no longer part of the EU internal market. Customs declarations, health certificates and other things have meant that deliveries that used to take one day now take at least three days, if they arrive at all.

A large part of Scottish fishing income comes from shellfish for the French and Spanish markets.

Fishing wholesaler David Noble in Ayr claims that it costs him up to SEK 6,000 a day to organize all the necessary paperwork.

– I doubt I can continue. If our fish is too expensive, our customers will buy elsewhere, Noble told Reuters.
