Boris Johnson’s climate promise on emissions

Boris Johnson is preparing to fight the climate crisis. Before next week’s virtual climate summit, hosted by the UK and others, the Prime Minister will present a new proposal. Britain will cut greenhouse gases faster and faster than any other major economy in the world in the next decade.

68% is the magic number. This is the amount of emissions that will be reduced up to and including 2030, compared to 1990. This is well above Sweden’s target and well above the previous target of 57%.

– We have shown that we can reduce our emissions and at the same time create hundreds of thousands of jobs. We took the lead with an ambitious new goal, says Boris Johnson according to The Guardian.

– The UK calls on all world leaders to develop their own ambitious plans to reduce emissions and set a net zero emissions target.

Environmental groups wanted even more

The target will be presented to the UN as part of Britain’s promise under the Paris Agreement.

But even if the goal is high, several environmental groups would have liked it better.

– It is an important step forward, but still not enough. More ambitious cuts are possible and necessary. We must also remember that the climate does not serve goals. Action is what counts, says Ed Matthew of the Climate Coalition to The Guardian.

Environmental organizations wrote in a letter to Boris Johnson last month asking for cuts of 75 percent, which they recognized was a difficult goal to achieve, but still possible.
