Book Fair: many political signs and happy faces when party leaders spoke about their favorite books | Josefin Holmström

FA few weeks ago UR released the documentary “Skrivglappet”, and Sweden saw the incredible fact that a considerable number of young people are almost functionally illiterate. They can’t get a job because they can’t write correctly. We know that the ability to write is in many ways a function of reading, and everyone agrees that something must be done.

In the midst of this furious debate comes the 2020 Set of the Book Fair, and the theme, “Read! Read! Read!” it feels very well found. The fair, which for obvious reasons is digital this time, begins with a political talk live from the Riksdag library. All party leaders (except Stefan Löfven, who is replaced by Mikael Damberg) can recommend two books each, a work of fiction and a non-fiction book. The Läsrörelsen association, founded in 2000 at the fair, organizes this event, under the leadership of Bengt Westerberg. Westerberg is cheerful, but politicians who go to talk about his reading of pleasure and duty seem extremely happy at first. Maybe I take them seriously for the moment.
