Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro withdraws the disputed nomination of a family friend for the position of new chief of the federal police.

The announcement comes after a judge suspended the appointment, following allegations that the president, with his election, wanted to influence sensitive police investigations.

There is reasonable evidence that Bolsonaro in the appointment “did not comply with the constitutional principles of impartiality, morality and public interest,” writes the judge.

Bolsonaro announces that he plans to appeal the judge’s decision.

Last week, Bolsonaro fired former police chief Maurício Valeixo, prompting popular Justice Minister Sérgio Moro to resign in protest. Moro accused the president of political involvement in police work, and the conflict got more fuel when Bolsonaro nominated his family friend Alexandre Ramagem, the new police chief.
