The phenomenon of light appeared in the sky in western Sweden around 6.40pm at night, which NyheterSTO also reported on.
On social media, many people are as if they see the light and hear a loud bang.
“It sounded like a powerful explosion outside, the house shook and the windows vibrated,” writes one person. “I thought the neighbor started the car so that the headlights would dissolve,” another person writes.
The light has been seen in very different places like Gothenburg, Stenungsund, Vänersborg and Herrljunga.
– I thought it was a flash. I didn’t hear anything, but the whole sky dissolved for a short time, says a witness in Herrljunga.
Investigator: bright meteor
According to Eric Stempels from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University, it is probably a very bright meteor – a car.
– In Norway, there are cameras that have captured this phenomenon and it clearly shows that it is a big problem. It came down at a fairly flat angle, came from the west, and ended in a great flash of light. It is the flash of light that people have seen. Because there is a popping sound, it has dropped to the slightly lower part of the atmosphere, says Eric Stempels and continues:
– This is a phenomenon that occurs regularly, about ten times a year, but it often occurs in areas where no one lives and is not noticeable. But when you enter an area like the West Coast where there are a lot of people, it shows.
Gothenburg police have also learned of the light.
– We have an incredible number of people who have heard from us, there are calls from Kungälv in the south and all the way to Vänersborg, the service officer tells NyheterSTO.
More recently, a few weeks ago, on November 7, attention was drawn to a similar brightness from Tranås in the south to Sundsvall in the north. Even then, it was probably a racing car, but according to Eric Stempels, Saturday night’s racing car over western Sweden was much brighter.
