NY. The hometown had turned against the president long before.
But the shameful chaos it caused in Washington on Wednesday was the final straw.
Donald Trump and his family will never be able to appear in New York again.
It can be argued that the world metropolis in which he was born and raised has always had a divided relationship with Donald Trump. Even when he was just a pompous real estate mogul, flashy TV star, and general prankster, many frowned. Vulgarity became occasional for intrusive, even for the Manhattan of the 80s and 90s.
But essentially, The Donald was still accepted as kind of a petty, curious example of what it can be like when a typical con man, constantly talking and haggling, yes, a “con man,” from Queens, moves up the social ladder and becomes rich.

Yet ever since he stepped onto the political scene and to the dismay of the hometown and boundless amazement managed to creep into the White House, the general reluctance has become compact. Not surprising in itself, New York City is a liberal stronghold, Democratic presidential candidates often getting between 70 and 80 percent of New York’s votes. But for a city boy to become so unpopular that he eventually stops going home (de facto we haven’t seen any wins here in a couple of years) is still remarkable.
And from now on, both the president himself and the rest of the family can be described as persona non grata at the mouth of the Hudson River. The shaky and shameful scenes on Wednesday, when in an inciting speech he led a rebellious mob to the Capitol, became the famous straw that broke the camel’s back that finally broke the back of the big-city camel.
Express pure disgust
Even the few remaining followers have since distanced themselves. Certainly. Personal acquaintances with conservative beliefs express pure disgust, though I think they should have realized that President Trump’s story would always end something like this, and New York Post columnists loyal to Trump who have long defended him write indignant tirades that he and he is solely responsible for exposing the very heart of American democracy to shameful attack.
So Donald Trump has taken his last bite of the Big Apple. He will no longer be able to appear on his mother’s street, no one wants to be seen with him anymore. I already knew that in itself, the President and First Lady Melania began searching for a suitable school for their son Barron in the Palm Beach area shortly after the electoral defeat in November (which, by the way, shows that all the fuss it’s been just narcissistic theater ever since), but he still can’t feel very glad to be actually transported from a city that, at least by his own point of view, he once dominated.
The situation is the same for high-profile family members who have chosen to share political prominence with him, especially his daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner. Before the Washington adventure, they belonged to the young Manhattan society, showing up in all the right contexts and moving with all the right beasts. But even they are deported to Florida now. They will never again be invited to the glittering galas of the Metropolitan Museum.
It is impossible not to ask yourself: Was it worth it?
