Are you a good laureate?
Yes and no. It is a perfectly acceptable choice. Louise Glück is one of the great poets of the United States. The authorship is physical, hurtful, and follows a central lyrical tradition with many references to the world of antiquity and vegetation. It is excellent that poetry is rewarded at the same time that American literature manages to penetrate the compact resistance of the Swedish Academy to the literature of the country. However, it is a shame that the Academy did not seize the opportunity to reward a broader storyteller at a time when the voice of literature is needed more than ever.
What does the election mean for the award status and position of the Swedish Academy?
If last year’s award for Peter Handke was an extended middle finger, this year’s award, if not an extended hand, is at least a pinky finger for readers. The award clearly follows the vein of Tomas Tranströmer in 2011.
