On August 16, Birgitta Eklund, 68, pedaled with her partner in the center of Uddevalla.

The couple had had ice cream in the summer heat and were on their way home when Birgitta suddenly ended up with the front wheel in a well, in the middle of the road.

– I was almost at the bottom of a hill when it turned black. I don’t remember anymore, but my partner told me I drove through a hole in the road, a pothole. And then I flew on the bike and hit my face on the asphalt, says Birgitta, who was also previously interviewed by Bohusläningen.

Multiple fractures in the jaw

After the fall, Birgitta’s heavy electric bike also fell on her back.

– I passed out and my partner called an ambulance. Several people got together and helped, according to my partner. They were not only curious, but they wanted to help. I myself only remember a brief memory of the ambulance and then in the Norra Älvsborg County Hospital.

Once in the emergency room, the doctors could see that Birgitta had really recovered.

– He had had a severe concussion, a broken eyebrow, had several fractures in the occipital bone of his jaw, several broken fingers and even several compressed vertebrae. On top of all that, he had several injuries to his knees and shoulder, he says.

“Very tired of the brain”

In the weeks after the accident, Birgitta had to undergo surgery and also returned to visit doctors.

But even though it’s been four weeks since the accident, she doesn’t feel recovered at all.

– According to the doctors, I am very, very tired of the brain. I have chest pain and I don’t know if it radiates from the vertebrae. I’m usually an active person and right now I feel depressed. I’m still not Birgitta now. But according to the doctors, it can take many months before I get restored, says Birgitta.

She continues:

– Life sped up.

Municipality: “Very boring”

After the accident, Birgitta’s partner reported the defective road to the municipality.

Fredrik Sdamientosvel is the head of the department of streets and parks of the municipality of Uddevalla. He regrets Birgitta’s accident.

– Of course it is very sad and terrible when such an accident happens, he says.

He continues:

– In the first situation when we discovered these cavities and potholes in the road earlier this summer, we put up warning signs to warn. We then reinforced with more warning signs when we learned of this accident, says Fredrik Snemosvel.
