The corona pandemic has hit the Swedish job market hard. In June, it was announced that 200,000 had been unemployed due to the crisis and unemployment reached nine percent in the same month.
The government now wants to combat unemployment at the door by allowing more people to study at the university level, especially in Skåne. The budget bill for 2021 proposes funds corresponding to 1,380 new study places at the University of Lund and 704 new places at the University of Malmö.
– It is about us working together in Sweden to get out of the crown crisis and ensure well-being. So it is important to provide good opportunities for education in the country, says Matilda Ernkrans (S), Minister of Higher Education and Research, to Kvällposten.
2.4 billion SEK
In total, the government spends 1.7 billion SEK on the country’s new educational places, and if study scholarships are added, it amounts to almost 2.4 billion SEK, according to Matilda Ernkrans.
Malmö and Lund together host by far the most educational venues of any Swedish university.
– The way we distribute the places depends on what each university and the schools themselves say they have the opportunity to continue growing, says Matilda Ernkrans and continues:
– It is extremely important to produce people with a high level of education. It is absolutely crucial that more people apply for higher education and want a chance to get stronger in the job market. It is also very common that where you study, you also become a requirement after the study period.
