Big investment in mental health – Debate

[ad_1]

Mental illness In society it is increasing. Mental illness is today the leading cause of sick leave in much of the Western world and the most common reason for people of working age to be out of the job market.

An increasing number of children and adolescents are requesting child and adolescent psychiatry that, despite heroic efforts, does not have the resources to help everyone. This development must be interrupted. Therefore, the Social Democrats and the Environment Party are now moving forward with a significant investment in mental health. Even more alarming is that our children are becoming increasingly affected, one in ten children between the ages of 10 and 18 has experienced mental health problems, and almost twice as many have psychosomatic disorders. Today, many children and young people experience stress and depression, and in order not to develop more severe mental illness later in life, it is of great importance that they receive early support.

In Sweden, mental diagnoses account for approximately 40 percent of all ongoing sick leave, and we know that the number of blacks is high. Poor mental health is still associated with a huge amount of taboo and guilt, complicating illness and recovery. According to OECD statistics, the cost of mental illness in Sweden is approximately SEK 70 billion per year.

Mental illness thus becomes a widespread social problem, costly not only for the individual but for the whole of society.

Psychiatry and that Preventive work against mental illness has been and continues to be very good in Uppsala County. But lately, we have seen several alarming trends and problems. Above all, efforts have been made to ensure that children and young people do not receive the help and support they need in time. Difficulties in recruiting competent staff, combined with increased needs, have led to queues growing.

There is a great need to develop the care and prevention of mental illness. But the problem of mental illness cannot be isolated to deal with health care responsibilities. If we want to break the development that we see, the whole community and all the different actors must work together. There must be well-developed cooperation between primary and specialized care, as well as with the student’s social and student health services. Therefore, the Uppsala Region, together with the county municipalities, carried out a needs analysis and concluded that certain target groups are particularly vulnerable and need special support.

The groups that will be prioritized are mainly children and youth, and people with neuropsychiatric and mental disabilities. Another group are the many asylum seekers and newcomers, which in part pose new problems and challenges for our operations. We will strengthen the efforts we are already making to promote mental health.

At the Regional Board Today we will decide on reinforcements with SEK 22 million. The money will be spent mainly on children and youth.

It can be substance abuse problems and / or various forms of mental disability. We will also propose reinforcements regarding mental health at the primary care level, that is, in health centers that are the first contact of most people with medical care.

Special efforts must also be made to prevent the most taboo and horrible of all, namely suicide. These initiatives have been made possible by the government’s policy that more resources have been allocated to health care.

We are convinced that the only way forward for healthcare is to increase resources and more staff. However, we do not believe that tax cuts and privatizations benefit the development we want to see for the attention in Uppsala County.
