A large fire in a large recycled paper warehouse broke out in Gävle at lunchtime on Monday.
– The fire is relatively under control now. But much work remains to be done before it is completely extinguished, Martin Johansson, internal commander of the Gästrike rescue service, tells TT in the afternoon.
The paper is stored in a sheet metal building.
– Wheel loaders empty it piece by piece and then you turn off the paper when you take it out, says Martin Johansson, predicting that the job will take “hours.”
The rescue service assesses that the smoke does not represent a danger to the public.
– It is newspaper, so there are no toxic chemicals. But it’s just that it smells smoky and a little sour. We have no reason to believe that it should be particularly toxic, says Johansson.
According to the police website, the fire must have started in a truck. There is currently no suspicion of a crime and no one should have been injured in the fire.
