Prior to this season, Chelsea have bought players for around SEK 2.3 billion to fight for the Premier League title. Players such as Timo Werner (Leipzig), Kai Havertz (Bayer Leverkusen), Ben Chilwell (Leicester) and Hakim Ziyeh (Ajax) have been chosen in the hopes of participating again and fighting for the trophy.
If it was worth it Are you already in the first round on the road against Brighton? Well then. New striker Timo Werner, who had the opportunity early on as did Havertz, made sure after just over 20 minutes of play that the guests got a penalty when he ran free and was sent off by home team goalkeeper Mathew Ryan. Jorginho saved himself from the penalty spot and put Chelsea 1-0.
However, the home team got up well and gave the guests a perhaps more difficult task than expected. In the second half, the pressure led to an undeserved draw when Leandro Trossard made it 1-1 from distance, a shot Kepa Arrizabalaga probably should have taken in Chelsea’s goal.
But the answer came immediately – and it was really a soccer candy. Right-back Reece James received the ball from Jorginho outside the penalty area and shot towards; the blow was a real gem and the ball was unreachable on the crossbar. It was the defender’s first goal in the Premier League and he restored control to Chelsea in the match. Midfielder Kurt Zouma was later also able to make it 3-1 after a corner kick in which the ball was unlucky enough to be controlled by a home defender and put Ryan in goal.
