In January, earlier this year, the first grass was laid for what will be the GoCo Health Innovation City in Mölndal, an innovation cluster whose main objective is to drive innovation in health and create a better life for people.
It started with AstraZeneca having land that the company did not need for its own expansion. Instead of building logistics and warehouse facilities, for example, they turned to urban development company Next Step Group and real estate company Vectura, which in turn created a joint venture: GoCo Development AB.
– Mölndal has many leading players in life sciences and in the immediate area there are already established healthcare companies such as AstraZeneca and Essity, so we already have a good foundation to build on, says Peder Wahlgren, CEO of GoCo Development.
“For us to reach the goal requires a good mix of actors”
The GoCo Health Innovation City’s goal is to drive innovation in healthcare and ultimately create a better life for people. It is GoCo Development’s job to execute the project and create an attractive district together with various stakeholders and companies.
– For the cluster to come to life, a good mix of actors is required. Developing around new innovations has become increasingly complex and requires many skills. Rather than creating everything yourself, it may be easier and better to partner with smaller companies that are more agile. We want the innovation cluster to be like a party: you bring what you like and try something new, says Peder Wahlgren and continues:
– But the district will not only be hosted by life science companies, we also want Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg, the Västra Götaland region, IT companies and the state in the form of, for example, RISE. We will also build hotels, nursing homes, and safe housing.

The first company will be installed in autumn 2021
The first lawn was taken in January, after the detailed plan for 100,000 square meters of building rights was approved. The first out is a state-of-the-art laboratory building for the Japanese cancer diagnostics company Fujirebo. The occupation will take place in the fall of 2021.
– At the same time, we will begin the construction of our flagship building, La Casa, after the holidays. It is a 21,000 square meter building that represents a large part of what we want to achieve with GoCo Health Innovation City. The Chamber will promote natural meetings across office boundaries where collaborations and knowledge sharing will flourish, says Peder Wahlgren.
Despite the current crisis in the crown, GoCo Development has continued to push the project forward and hire staff.
– Some companies have been reluctant, but we continue at the predetermined production rate with the conviction that the innovation cluster is more relevant than ever. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is the importance of cooperation, both nationally and internationally, concludes Peder Wahlgren.
