Future US President Joe Biden and Janet Yellen, whom he nominated for the post of Finance Minister.
A multi-party task force with members of Congress is proposing a $ 908 billion support package for the American economy. Acting President Joe Biden calls for swift and forceful action.
– Now all of Congress should come together and put together a solid support package to meet these urgent needs, says Democrat Biden.
The proposed money (equivalent to about SEK 7.74 billion) is intended to cover part of the economic ravages of the corona pandemic in the United States through April 1.
Under the proposal, $ 228 billion will be used to cover salary costs for employees at hotels, restaurants and small businesses. There is also money for unemployment benefits and business support in the form of loans, including for the aviation industry.
Members of the Senate and House of Representatives still do not support the actions of the White House. Neither Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell nor House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have said yes.
Requirements met
At the same time, Republican demands for support for business are said to have been met, as well as democratic wishes for support for authority at the state and local levels.
One of the senators behind the proposal, Democrat Joe Manchin, says it would be unjustified not to accept a support package and quickly.
He’s getting support from across the aisle from Republican Senator Susan Collins.
-It is not a situation of political frivolity, he says.
McConnell said Tuesday night that he had received a supporting measure proposal from Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leaders in the Senate. McConnell expects a package to be ready for deployment early next year.
Has been delayed
Additional support measures to replace those introduced in the spring, but which have now expired, have been delayed due to political disagreement in Congress.
Outgoing Finance Minister Steven Mnuchin has voiced support for some of the measures. He is expected to discuss the issue with Pelosi later on Tuesday, when they will meet to negotiate a budget agreement that will avoid a threat of shutdown of the state apparatus on December 11.
When the next president of the United States, Democrat Joe Biden, takes office on January 20, it will be the former governor of the central bank, Janet Yellen, who will continue to handle the issues, if approved by Congress. Biden nominates her for the position of Finance Minister.
“An American tragedy”
Yellen said Tuesday that the United States is facing a historic crisis.
– It is an American tragedy and it is important that we act quickly. Passivity will cause a decline that will reinforce itself and cause even more devastation.
Speaking in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden said the aid package was just the beginning of what was needed to reverse the trend.
– My transition team is already working on what I will present at the next congress to address the crises we are facing, especially our economic crisis and covid.
