– America has no closer friend than Canada. That’s why this is my first presidential phone call for you, and that my first bilateral meeting (is with you), Joe Biden said during the video liaison meeting between the White House in Washington and Trudeau’s office in Ottawa.
Trudeau said the neighbors will work together to fight COVID, but also to work with the United States on other global political issues.
– Thanks again for the large-scale escalation around addressing climate change. US leadership has been very weak in recent years, Trudeau said in a statement to former US President Donald Trump, whose “America first” policy strained relations with Canada, among others.
After the mutual public honors, the leaders talked behind closed doors for two hours. The agenda included the economy of North America, the Arctic, and developments in Venezuela and Myanmar.
When the meeting ended, Biden announced that the United States and Canada at the ministerial level will work together to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and, among other things, coordinate countries’ policies in this area. The work for the United States is led by climate envoy John Kerry and, on the Canadian side, by Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson.
