A caravan of police cars with flashing blue lights drove through the streets of Berlin in the morning. More than 1,600 police officers from eight federal states participated in the operation. Vehicles, garages and homes were searched.

Three people were arrested on suspicion of being involved in the notorious theft of jewelry from the castle of residence in Dresden almost a year ago. Later, two people were caught by surveillance cameras when they entered through a window and stole jewels from the so-called Grüne Gewölbe, the green vault. They brought with them diamonds, rubies and sapphires. Among the stolen goods were jewel-covered swords, stars of order and a 49-carat diamond, valued at more than 100 million Swedish crowns. The total value of the stolen items is described as immeasurable.

Jürgen Schmidt, A spokesman for the Dresden Public Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday morning’s arrests were the result of hard work and the search for the jewels continued.

– We have always worked with two clues: capture the culprits and bring them to justice, and find the kidnapped jewels. We work intensely with the search, but unfortunately I cannot promise anything, he says at a press conference.

DNA traces from a getaway car and surveillance camera footage has led to the arrest of the three suspects, according to the prosecutor’s office. One of them had previously been accused of being involved in the high-profile theft of a 100-kilo gold coin from the Bodemuseet in Berlin in spring 2017.

The three detainees have ties to a network of criminal families, according to Dresden police. Two of the detainees are 23 years old and the third 26 years old.

Police are also looking for two young men, both 21, suspected of being involved in the robbery but who could not be arrested. The names and photographs of the two suspects have been made public and anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to contact the police.
