The German federal state of Berlin introduces oral protection requirements for those traveling by public transport.

Berlin, which is its own federal state and the capital of Germany, joins other federal states that have introduced similar rules, such as Baden-Württemberg, Hamburg, and Hesse.

Capital Mayor Michael Müller says the rule will take effect on April 27 and that wearing mouth and nose protection will be mandatory when traveling by subway, tram and bus.

The message comes when the country begins to reopen after a time of very strict restrictions.

On Monday, the German government, in consultation with the federal states, announced that stores with less than 800 square meters may reopen.

Schools will gradually reopen starting May 4, with priority for seniors. On the same date, hairdressers can also start receiving clients.
