Astra Zeneca has announced to the EU that it will deliver just under 60 percent of the agreed quantity of vaccine for the first time during the first quarter of the year. This is even before the drug company’s vaccine has been approved for use in the EU.
– There is irritation and frustration among my colleagues at the European Commission. Astra Zeneca must find a solution, says vaccine coordinator Richard Bergström in SVT’s “Aktuellt.”
Should use factories from other countries
Bergström and also the EU Commission believe that Astra Zeneca can take its doses of vaccines from factories in the UK and deliver them to the EU, in order for the deal to stand. But it’s not on the world map, says the drug company.
– The EU has its production chain and the UK has it. We can’t solve one problem by creating another problem elsewhere, says Jacob Lund, communications director for Astra Zeneca Norden at SVT’s “Aktuellt.”
Bergström: “Don’t believe the argument”
The message infuriates Bergström, he believes that Astra Zeneca must look around the world for alternative solutions, to comply with the agreement with the EU.
– We don’t buy the argument that we can’t get UK fixes. But we can also look at the United States. It should be possible to use those facilities.
– The important thing is that Astra Zeneca does everything possible to solve the problem and find doses elsewhere. You can probably try a little more, says Bergström.
Lund emphasizes that Astra Zeneca is doing its best but does not want to give any promise of solutions.
– We understand frustration and we ourselves feel frustrated, he says.
