Four men died Thursday on an iceberg in Vallsjön, outside Sävsjö. Bengt Enlund, 64, fished with two of them, but went home before the accident happened.
– It was a shock. We’ve been fishing like this for 20 years, says Bengt Enlund.
Småland’s Sävsjö is scarred today by grief since yesterday’s tragic fatal accident in which four men aged between 65 and 75 died on an iceberg.
Bengt Enlund lost two of his closest friends in the accident. He was on the ice with them and fished the same day, but went home earlier.
– I left at twelve o’clock. So my friends stayed on the ice. We had started fishing in the middle of the lake. When I went, they were closer to the beach, says Bengt Enlund.

I had been fishing for many years
He can’t understand how it could have gone so wrong. The two friends were experienced fishermen and had been fishing on the lake for over 20 years.
– There was no sign that the ice was weak when I was there. They were well equipped for this too. You couldn’t be more equipped, says Bengt Enlund.
When a helicopter began to circle the lake and a large force from the rescue service arrived, Bengt began to suspect that something was wrong. Then he went to his friends’ house to see if they had come home. But their cars were not at home.
Then he received the news that his friends had died.
– It’s heavy. Today I lit a candle on my friend’s motorcycle. It’s here at our workplace, says Bengt Enlund.

Lifebuoy discovered nearby
The accident occurred in the northern part of Vallsjön. There are a handful of huts along the beach. One of the cabin owners tells Aftonbladet that there was a call from a concerned relative Thursday night.
– Two people had disappeared and he asked me to come out and look. I saw a lifebuoy on the ice and called 112, says the owner of the cabin who wishes to remain anonymous.
At a quarter to seven on Thursday night, the rescue service was alerted and went out with several units. When they arrived at the scene, they found a person on an iceberg.
– Then we found three more people. In half an hour, we have picked up four people and performed CPR on them, says Jonas Petri, rescue leader of the rescue service in Sävsjö.
