Artist Delphine Boël, 52, is the out-of-wedlock daughter of former Belgian King Albert II. Seven years ago, she began her legal battle to be recognized as her father’s daughter and thus also to be recognized as a princess. Now the court has ruled in her favor, writes The Guardian.

– She is happy with the verdict, which ends a long process that has been painful for her and her family. A legal victory can never replace a father’s love, but it does give him a sense of justice, Delphine Boël’s attorneys said in a statement.

Princess Delphine of Saxen-Coburg-Gotha’s children, Josephine and Oscar are also recognized as princesses and princes of Belgium respectively.

“She was a daughter of love”

The 86-year-old former King Albert abdicated in 2013 in part due to the legal process that has now been ended by a DNA test. The new princess was the result of an affair he had with Baroness Sybille de Selys Longchamps. The baroness first told about the affair, which she said took place between 1966 and 1984, in connection with the abdication.

– I didn’t think I could have children, because I had an infection, so we were not careful.

– It was a wonderful time. Delphine was a beloved child. Albert was not a father figure, but he was very kind to her.
