The biggest protest against the president described as Europe’s last dictator is expected to take place on Sunday. Thousands of protesters gathered on Sunday to pressure Alexander Lukashenko.
Witnesses speak of massive security forces in the city; in addition, several metro stations have been closed for “security reasons”.
Historically large strike
The demands of the incumbent president are great. Since Lukashenko, with the help of rigged votes, won the elections in August, there have been major protests in the country.
And now the opposition is threatening a strike.
A convocation entitled “The ultimatum of the people” raises three demands:
Alexander Lukashenko must resign.
The violence must stop.
Political prisoners must be released.
If the demands are not met before the end of the day, the country will launch a national strike, the threat says. Among others, opposition leader Svetalana Tsichanouskaja is behind the threat.
Sunday’s rally is expected to be historically large.
