Avoid rush hours, avoid shopping, and click home with your Christmas gifts online.
That was the message from today’s press conference on the state of the trade.
– This year there will be no ordinary Christmas, says the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Ibrahim Baylan.
The following month is usually the most favorable for retail. With Black Friday and Christmas included, we are used to stores filling to the brim with customers looking for pats.
This year’s Christmas shopping will be different. That issue became clear when Trade and Industry Minister Ibrahim Baylan held a press conference today alongside the CEO of the Swedish Public Health Agency, Johan Carlson, and Karin Johansson, CEO of Swedish Trade.
– We all long for Christmas, the holidays, the bright spots in this dark time. This year we will also have Christmas, there will be Christmas gifts. But this year, the big shopping round must be canceled, Baylan said, continuing his appeal to the Swedish people:
– My message is simple: if you can’t buy without avoiding congestion, you shouldn’t buy either.

Difficult times for trading
Christmas gift retailers are encouraged to turn to e-commerce to do their business. But despite the fact that e-commerce is on the rise, it cannot make up for the loss of large stores, says Karin Johansson.
– From a commercial point of view, we can affirm that the rigorous advice, which is promised, will have immediate effects on our stores. Many are the merchants who experience that customer flows are transversal. Of course, the job of stopping the spread of the infection is absolutely critical. But many commercial companies have to pay a high price, he says.
The call: “Distribute the purchases”
He affirms that the industry that has been affected the most is “the one that has to do with our appearance”, such as clothing and shoe stores.
– It is the part of the industry that bleeds the most. “We are more excited about how we feel at home, how we equip the home offices, what we have in the garden,” says Karin Johansson.
What should you do if you still need to go to a physical store?
– Our call to all: spread your purchases now. Start shopping for Christmas gifts right now. Make sure there is no congestion at delivery points, says Johansson.
